What are essential oils?

They’re kind of everywhere.  I see them in the store, on Instagram, in my friends’ purses, and at the grocery story. So, what exactly ARE they?

Essential oils are just that - oils.

Essential oils can be described as the “life blood” of the plant–aromatic liquids that are steam-distilled from plants–including their respective parts such as seeds, bark, leaves, stems, roots, flowers, and fruit.

The purity of an essential oil is determined by its chemical constituents (components or elements).

These constituents can be affected by variables such as:

  • The plant source (stem, leaves, bud, etc.)

  • Soil condition

  • Fertilizer

  • Geographical region

  • Climate

  • Altitude

  • Harvest season

  • Distillation process

Essential oils provide the plant with the ability to restore itself after suffering an injury, oxygenate the plant (literally increasing oxygen throughout the plant), and boost the plant’s own immune defense properties.

Just as essential oils perform these valuable processes within the plant, they also perform these same functions within the human body.

Therapeutic grade essential oils facilitate the body’s innate ability to maintain wellness and support a healthy atmosphere. Essential oils are composed of teeny molecules. These molecules so small that they can pass through our tissues and directly into our cells.  Our systems are super effective and can transport these molecules all over our bodies within a matter of minutes.

Not all essential oils are created equal!

Not all oils are safe to use in the ways Young Living essential oils are. Those oils you saw at the health store or co-op cannot be ingested the way Young Living oils can.  One thing that is mind blowing is how easy it is for other essential oil brands to have misleading “100% pure” labels - yet contain synthetic oils and additives.  Pretty crazy!

Young Living is the ONLY company that grows it’s own plants from start to finish, and owns their own farms, with the strictest standards around for all farms, partner farms, and painstakinly vetted Seed to Seal Suppliers.

You can read more about Young Living's Seed to Seal process here.

Three methods of use are topically, aromatically, and internally.

Young Living essential oil bottles and supplements are labeled with the correct usage. However, it is always valuable to see if an essential oil is also in a supplement! It is wise to use an essential oil as suggested on the bottle, but many oilers have found that an oil or supplement has many uses.

Because the FDA regulates products, Young Living had to choose one specific way to use the product and label the bottle as such. BUT YOU CAN USE THE OIL HOWEVER YOU WANT IN YOUR OWN HOME.

TOPICALLY

Young Living Essential Oils can be applied directly to the skin - always remembering to check your labels for dilution instructions. Some oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil (coconut oil, grape-seed oil, organic olive oil, V6 oil, etc.) while others can be applied directly on the skin with no dilution (referred to as “neat.”) Using oils on your feet is a quick and efficient way to get oils into your system.  You can also wear essential oils as perfume and to lift your mood.

If an oil feels “hot,” add a carrier oil, such as Young Living’s V-6 oil, olive oil, or quality fatty vegetable oil. You might want to apply water, but this will only serve to drive the essential oil into your skin as it is attracted to the most redily available fat. Not to mention, oil and water don’t mix.

AROMATICALLY

Oils can also be inhaled directly from the bottle, or by using a diffuser.  This is actually the quickest way for your body to use the oils. And your house will smell amazing.

Did you know that if you are on Loyalty Rewards, and you order 50 pv month 1 & 2, that you will receive a free diffuser?

INTERNALLY

Lastly, because of Young Living’s Seed to Seal process, there are many oils that can be taken internally as a dietary supplement. You can add oils to your water, or even into a capsule. The Vitality line is clearly labeled for this use. Many oils work well at encouraging wellness in the body and whenever they come in contact with petrochemicals they escort them from the body. Therefore, a glass or stainless steel, not plastic, container, should be used when drinking essential oils.
